J. C. Newman Cigar Co. Museum & Factory

Among all of the exciting places to visit in Ybor City, the J.C. Newman Cigar Co. Museum & Factory stands out as one of the most intriguing options. This museum covers the growth of the cigar industry in the Tampa area and is open to the public without charging a fee. It is housed in a building that dates back to 1910. The structure has been given a classy makeover through the renovation process.

El Reloj is the sole cigar factory that continues to operate in a city that was previously home to more than 150 different cigar manufacturers. The largest cigar factory in the world has seen better days, but those days are a distant memory at this point. Participate in the 75-minute tour to gain a deeper understanding of cigar manufacturing and access to areas of the factory that are often off-limits to guests (additional fee). As part of this special behind-the-scenes tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the factory’s underground stairway, which was only just recently discovered. The manufacturing of cigars continues to take place in the same factories and utilizing the same procedures that have been standard practice for many decades.

By the time it was finally finished in 1910, El Reloj had already established a name for itself as the largest and most prestigious cigar factory in the entire world. El Reloj Cigar Factory is the only one of an estimated 150 cigar factories in Tampa that is still producing cigars. El Reloj is included in the Ybor City National Historic Landmark District, which is also included on the National Register of Historic Places. Both of these prestigious honors are held by El Reloj.

A visit to El Reloj in the modern day is comparable to taking a stroll through history. Since almost a century ago, the Newman family has been making cigars in El Reloj behind the same recognizable red brick facade, employing the same time-honored, artisanal methods and hand-cranked, antiquated machinery.

El Reloj is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:30 PM; however, cigar rolling is stopped at 3:00 PM, so guests are advised to arrive early. The J.C. Newman factory store, in addition to the cigar museum, theater, rolling room, and theater, all provide complimentary access to their patrons. If you would like to go on a guided tour of the factory, you may purchase tickets on the following page by clicking the button that is located below. Tickets to go on the tour are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, students, and veterans.
